The History of 87 Penkett Road, Wallasey [electronic resource]
2020
eBook
I wrote the first edition of ‘The History of 87 Penkett Road, Wallasey’ back in June 2017 but after giving a talk on the house soon afterwards to our local family history group so much more information – not only about the house but about the old schoolhouse down the road - came to light and I felt compelled to document it all. This led to a separate publication entitled ‘The History of Eversley School, Penkett Road, Wallasey’ as well as this updated version of ‘The History of 87 Penkett Road, Wallasey’.We already know there is nothing remarkable about the modest, 1960’s semi-detached house pictured on the front cover but number 87 Penkett Road was built on the site of a large, much grander Victorian house with a far more interesting history. My husband and I bought number 87 in 1975 and once the mortgage was paid off the original deeds became ours to keep. These deeds, together with maps, street directories, census returns, newspaper reports and more than a little local knowledge have been the basis of this story. Thanks go to Fiona Brookes for jogging her Aunt’s memories of her early married life in a flat atnumber 87 Penkett Road in the 1950s and for typing them up. Irene Cameron’s account appears, in full, at the end of this book. Thanks, also, to Garnet Walker for his memories of ‘Ashmole House’ and Sheila Hamilton for spotting on ‘Wallasey Memories’ the Buying Permit dated October 1945 which was allocated to a newly married couple in a flat at 87 Penkett Road. Finally, thanks to my husband, Roger, for printing and comb binding this volume.
